16 and Under Western Intermediate Sailing Championships at CYC

The first 2 days there was the YOTS seminar. It was very successful with 4 29'ers training, 6 Lasers, 14 Radials, 20 Optis and 16 Bytes. Every group worked on boat specific skills such as tacking, starting and rigging. The optimist sailors improved their sailing without rudder techniques, taking down the sprit pole as well as mast, balancing on the gunwale and all kinds of other fun things in the boat during the no wind day on Friday. The practice race took place in no wind, but all the sailors enjoyed the experience and go tot know coaches from all the 4 provinces.

The regatta started Saturday with very little wind. The Lasers, Radials and Byte sailors sailed a few races before lunch. After lunch the wind improved and all the classes were on the water. Saturday night was really good with b-b-qed steaks and John Russell's presentation to all the sailors. The last day gave us nice wind in the morning and we all sailed until noon when the wind died. Every sailor, coach and parent enjoyed the great hospitality of both Lake Wabamun YC and Calgary YC. There were many winners in the regatta but all the sailors won by improving their skills.

Next year's Western 16 and under Championship will take place in Saskatchewan. For results go to www.sail123.com.
