Brigitte
Smutny (Manitoba Provincial Coach) headed up the 29er group,
Mike Milner and Matt Johnstone (RCYC) headed up the Laser
group, and Amy Goman (Ontario Provincial Coach) and Nick
Kim (Quebec Provincial Coach) headed up the Radial group.
In addition, the Manitoba Sailing Association recruited
49er sailors Matt Dubreucq and Geoff Gales to spend 1 day
each with the 29er group as guest coaches.
Training days consisted of exposing sailors to a variety
of conditions. With the Gulf Stream near by, the Laser and
Radial classes wasted no time getting out to the big wave
conditions. Grueling upwind grinds followed by a lengthy
downwind set the pace for the remainder of the week.
The three days following brought 7-15 Knot conditions in
the bay. The laser group began to focus on starts and racing,
while the 29er group was settling into speed and boat handling
in heavier wind conditions. The radial group, which was
the largest of the 3 classes, was split into 2 groups allowing
each group to target different goals. The themes for the
week were fitness, acceleration, reaching, and planning
and surfing.
Optional activities during the camp included dryland training
(running, basketball, etc), as well as information sessions
on topics such as preparing to win major events, sponsorship,
fundraising, and tactics.
After 7 days of hard training and through the support of
Swans Yacht Sails, sailors from Ontario, Manitoba, and Quebec
headed back home feeling more prepared for their upcoming
events. Thank you to all the coaches for making this training
camp a huge success.
