Little Bird Regatta
Pelican Yacht Club's second annual
Little Bird Dinghy Regatta was a series of races, aimed
to give sailors young and old the opportunity to race
in dinghies against dinghies. With a two hour Race
Clinic in the morning, conducted by Head Coach Brigitte
Smutny, the regatta started on time with 19 sailors,
who enjoyed
racing in good winds and in good company. |

Canadian Olympic Regatta Kingston
The Portsmouth Olympic Harbour
has been a beehive of activity for the past five days
with over 600 sailors competing during CORK Series
1. 6 out of 13 boats from Manitoba qualified for the

National Youth Championships
Racing for the Youths began on
Sunday August 12th. Manitoba sailors surprised with
two bronze medals, one for Chris Bradley and Chris
Ferguson in the 29er class and one for Julia Bailey
in the Laser Radial class. Manitoba's Maddie and Celeste
Ferguson were also awarded the prestigious Fogh

From August 3 to 11, up to 2,300
athletes, coaches and officials descended on Northern
Alberta for nine days of intense competition in the

Respect in Sport online course – mandatory for Coaches and Instructors
Sport Manitoba believes in being proactive
in ensuring sport in our province is safe and welcoming
for all participants. The course takes only three hours
in length and is divided into 6,1/2 hour segments. It can

Canadian Youth Championships in Edmonton
16 athletes went on to the 18&under Youth Championships
at Lake Wabamun. Again in light winds Chris Bradley
and Chris Ferguson showed a strong performance with
winning a silver medal in the 29ers. The Ferguson sisters
as well as Kathleen Brousseau surprised everybody with
winning a bronze medal in the 29er and a bronze medal

Sail West in Calgary
With 17 sailors, 3 coaches and 3 parents the Manitoba
Sailing Team showed a strong representation at the open
regatta at Lake Chestermere. The Sailing Team won Gold
with Chris Bradley and Chris Ferguson and Silver with
Maddie and Celeste Ferguson in the 29er event and Bronze
with Paloma Corrin in the Radial event. For results

A fantastic camp was put on by Ivan and Penny McMorris
and crew at the Victoria Beach YC. With just the right
amount of wind the coaches got a lot of work done with
the athletes. Everybody should be well prepared for

BOOT Camp at RLWYC
This
past week featured 31 sailors from Manitoba and NW Ontario
participating in BOOT Camp followed by the Manitoba
Sailing Association Provincial Championships. For final

MIST Camp and Zig Zag Open at ZZYC
30
athletes enjoyed two days of great training in high
winds and competed right after at the Zig Zag open on
the weekend. Unfortunately it was one of the calmest
weekend this year and just one race could be sailed.

Laser and Radial Canadians at GYC
The Laser Canadians took place July
7-9 at the Gimli Yacht Club. With high winds between 15-27
knots and huge waves Lake Winnipeg showed it's best and
12 races were sailed in a fleet of 32 Lasers and 20 Laser
radials. Winner in the Laser class is Luke Ramsey followed
by Abe Torchinsky, both from BC and Anthony Bouileth from
Quebec. Winner in the Laser radial class is Tanja Smutny
from Manitoba followed by Maggie Shea from Chicago and

Coaches Clinic at RLWYC
The annual coaches clinic took place
June 26-30 at RLWYC. With an enrollment of 17 green
participants and 6 blue participants the clinic was
one of the biggest ever run. The clinic was well run
with great Instructor Evaluators from BC and AB and
we now have 21 new instructors for Manitoba. |

Boat Show March 2-5
The Mid-Canada Boat Show is the largest and by far the best
attended show for outdoor people of all ages in central
Canada. This is a selling show, which attracts boaters,
fishermen, campers, cabin owners, travelers, outdoor enthusiasts,
water sport athletes and hopefully lots of sailors. MSA
will have a double booth on the second floor together with
six other water sports.

The Falcon fall regatta was held
September 17 & 18. Saturday morning started with
rain showers as the sailors were arriving. By the time
the first race started the rain had stopped but unfortunately
the wind died with it. 4 races were completed on Saturday

Optimist Canadians in Halifax
100 Optimist sailors competed
in the 2005 Canadian Optimist Dinghy Championships
at the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron in Halifax.
In addition to athletes from nine Canadian provinces,
there were sailors from Germany, the United States,
Barbados, Bermuda and Mexico.The 100 athletes were
divided into two fleets, the green fleet had 28
sailors, all novice racers, and 72 competitors were
sailing in the championship fleet which includes
the top Optimist sailors in Canada. Two team members,Van
Bailey and Willy Konantz participated in this year's
event. Congratulations to Van Bailey who was 8th
overall and earned a spot on the Worlds team for

Racing Kingston) hosts outstanding, world class
sailing regattas in Kingston. four team members

16 and Under
Western Intermediate Sailing Championships at CYC
Calgary Yacht Club was the place
for the 16 and under Championship in from August
18-21. Wabamun Sailing Center was the original host
club but due to the huge oil spill the event was
moved to Calgary. Lake Chestermere gave the athletes
light air the 4 days but it was a fun event both
on and off the water for all the participants and

Canada Summer
Games at the Last Mountain Lake Sailing Centre
Regina Sailing Club, Saskatchewan
Over 80 athletes, coaches and managers participated
at the 2005 Canada Games. The Manitoba Sailing Team
had one of their best performances ever and won
silver in the Byte class, Paloma Corrin, silver
in the 29er female class, Katja Smutny/Kristy Slough
and bronze in the Laser radial female class, Tanja

Canadian Youth Championships
Team Toba is back from the trip
to Youth Championships at New Brunswick. Great trip
with some good performances. Congratulations to Bryce
Brousseau and Brian Fast for winning gold in the 420
male event, Maddie and Celeste Ferguson for gold in
the 420 female event and Laurel Thompson and Hannah
Beverage for silver in the 420 female event. Our two
Bytes finished 24 with Paloma and 27 with Jocelyn out
of 90 boats. Well done girls!! Scott finished 20 out
of 30 in the Laser class and did way better then the
result shows. Out of 21 29ers our team finished 6 with
Chris Bradley and Willie Macdonald, 10 with Gordie
Parke and Chris Ferguson, 12 with Mark Townsend and
Tristan Bruning and 13 with first timers Dylan and
Rory McMorris. Way to go guys!
Thanks to Brigitte and Tanja for coaching the double handed course and to Craig
who spend long hours on the single handed course. A big thank you also to our

BOOT Camp and 15&under Provincial Championships in Thunder Bay
This year's BOOT Camp was one of the finest ever run. The members and friends of the Temple Reef Junior Sailing Club were the most welcoming organizers and looked after every aspect of the event. What a great group of people! With 28 participants and the weather god on their side, the sailing was superb on Lake Superior. Coaches Kzrystoph Machnowsky, Mark Pataki and Tyler Green did a wonderful job to increase the excitement and level of sailing. |

MIST Camp and 16&under Provincials at RLWYC
Our annual Manitoba Intermediate Sail Training Camp with 30 participant took place at Royal Lake of the Woods Yacht Club from Wednesday August 3 to Sunday August 7. With two coaches from BC, Rob Douglas for the 420s and Mark Patake for the Optis, the sailing offered everything, from heavy winds on Thursday to no wind on Sunday. On Saturday and Sunday the athletes battled for the 16&under provincial championships |

A great camp for beginner racers
was organized by Ivan McMorris and his crew at the Victoria
Beach YC. Thanks to Penny for providing great and healthy
food for all of us and Chris for running the races.

and the following Big Bird regatta. |

Extreme condition for our three 29er
Teams (Gordie Parke/Chris Ferguson, Mark Townsend/Tristan
Bruning, Katja Smutny/Kristy Slough) at the Julian Bethwaite
Clinic, the US Nationals and the World Championships
in San Francisco. With winds around 25 to 30 knots every
day they tried to survive for the first days but by
the end most of them were able to keep their boats up

was Ross Bailey in his Lightning from Thunder Bay.
His son Van Bailey came first in the Optimist fleet.

Windy conditions at the annual Buffalo Cup at the Winnipeg Sailing Centre at Fort Whyte
5 Opti sailors and 6 team members in
Jys competed on June 1 for the Buffalo Cup. The Winnipeg
Regional Champions and winners of the JY Buffalo Cup are
Frazer and Jocelyn McLaren, who won some lonely races. Mackenzie
Carlson was up against some good competition and won the
Championships and the Opti Buffalo Cup. For results click

Coaching Clinic
The Manitoba Sailing Association
is running a Level I (Green) from Monday, June 27 to
Friday, July 1 from 9:00 am - 6:00pm at the Royal Lake
of the Woods Yacht Club. Evening hours at the Yacht
Club might be required. Club 420's will be provided.

Costs $400, a deposit of $150 must accompany the registration

Disabled Sail Manitoba Inc.
Disabled Sail Manitoba Inc. will
again be “sailing in the city” at its home location
of Fort Whyte Centre. We will be offering sailing lessons,
pleasure sailing, as well as therapeutic sailing. For
race enthusiasts we will also have regular race events.
DSM is also located at Pelican Yacht
Club with a totally accessible facility. The Ridge Camp

Annual General Meeting and Awards Ceremony
The Annual General Meeting of the
Manitoba Sailing Association will be held on Friday
November 19, 2004 at 6:00pm at the Wildewood Club, 761
North Drive in Fort Garry.
Our
Awards Ceremony will be right after the AGM and an
Italian Banquet will be served for $25 for adults
and $15 for kids 15 and under. Limited tickets are
available so please book you ticket asap at the MSA
office at 925-5648 or send an email to sailingadmin@sport.mb.ca
Please come out and support our athletes,
officials, instructor and coaches and volunteers and
take the opportunity to have a good chat with other
sailors about this summer's past challenges and successes.

Team Toba Accident
While returning from the
Youth Camp in Kingston the team van with the small boat
trailer had an accident near Wawa. Nobody was injured.
Black ice caused the situation and the van with the trailer
attached rolled twice over big rocks in the ditch. The
van and a number of the boats are write-offs. |
|
Kingston Fall Camp
A contingent of eight team members
participated at the Fall Camp and the following
regatta in Kingston. Superb coaching was provided
for the 29ers with Dan Cunningham, Bytes with Kelly
Hand and Lasers with Ken Dool and Brian Todd.
Congratulations to Scott Brousseau for winning a
gold medal in the Laser radial class, Julia Bailey
gold and Jocelyn McLaren silver in the Byte class,
Gordie Parke and Chris Ferguson silver in the 29er
class and Royden Brousseau in the highly attended
Laser NQR finished 30 out of 57 |

Mobility Cup at Pelican Yacht Club
Kudos to the 85 volunteers of the
Pelican Yacht Club who made Mobility Cup the best event
ever. It's the first time in the event's 13 years that
is hasn't been held in a major Canadian city and by
all accounts it was a huge success. "The Ridge",
who housed and fed participants and volunteers was newly
renovated and with extensive renovations to be wheelchair
friendly the PYC volunteers around Dennis Collingwood
created a legacy for disabled sailing in the Westman

Five team members participated at
the Canadian Olympic Regatta in Kingston. In the Laser

Opti Canadians in Hamilton
Team Toba sent a contingent of seven sailors
to the Opti Canadians at the Royal Hamilton YC. Five parents,
two coaches and a manager supported this event. For all results

BOOT Camp 2004
This years BOOT Camp (Basic Olympic Optimist
Training) was hosted by the Gimli Yacht Club. 15 Optimist
sailors attended the two days of training and two days of
Provincial Championships. The Provincial Optimist Team leaves
well prepared to the Canadian Optimist Championships in Hamilton
ON.
Congratulations to overall winner and 13 & under Champion
Van Bailey, to our 15 & under Champion Kyle Ross and our
10& under Champion Austin Ross and the winner of the green
fleet Boomer Blumenschein.

Canadian Youth Championships
lose to 300 athletes competed this
past week at the CYA 18 and Under Youth Nationals hosted
out of Beaconsfield Yacht Club in Beaconsfield, QC.
A total of 22 athletes, 4 coaches and 4 parents from
Manitoba attended the event. Bryce Brousseau and Brian
Fast won a gold medal in the 420 class for Team Toba.

FruitBowl 2004 at Hudson YC
FruitBowl 2004 was the largest ever.
448 athletes and coaches participated, and 294 boats
competed. Manitoba was represented by 20 athletes and
two coaches. Team Toba's Royden Brousseau won a gold
medal in the Laser Radial fleet and Bryce Brousseau
and Brian Fast won a gold medal in the 420 fleet. The
Ferguson sisters, Maddie and Celeste won a silver medal
in their first big event. Congratulations to all! Results

Western Intermediate Sailing Championships Results
The Big Bird Classic Regatta with the
Western Intermediate Sailing Championships and the Youth
Olympic Training Seminar saw over 85 boats competing on
the weekend. From an event that 5 days ago looked like
there were 35-40 boats totaled to an event that had over
80 boats and 140 or so athletes (225 participants), this
was Manitoba's largest sailing event of the year and established
a record for PYC. The success of this great regatta was
only possible because of a lot of volunteers and partnerships.
A big thank you to the race committee with Chris Aldridge
as the chair, safety chair Wolfe Smythe and all coaches
and parents from Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta, who
helped to make this event successful.
Congratulations to our 16&under sailors Julia Bailey
(4), Jocelyn McLaren (5) and Amanda Bakker (7) in the
Byte fleet (16 participants). Scott Brousseau (2) and
Robert Evanchuk (3) in the Laser radial fleet (7participants),
Mark Townsend and Tristan Bruning (1), Bryce Brousseau
and Brian Fast (2) and Dylan McMorris and Rory McMorris
(3) in the 29er/420 class (5 participants).
Congratulations to the top finishers in the Opti 10 and
under Austin Ross (1), Boomer Blumenschein (3), Opti 13&under
Van Bailey (1), WIlly Konantz (2) and Larissa Blumenschein

Zig Zag Open Results
The 2004 Zig Zag open Regatta (July
17-18), hosted by the Zig Zag YC, proved to be an excellent
competition for 70 competitors (19 Optimists and 29
sailors in Lasers, Radials, Bytes, 29ers, 420s, Europe,
Lightning, E Scow and Mistral in the open fleet). Kudos
to the dedicated on water and on shore regatta crew,
Sailors, parents and volunteers had a good time and
enjoyed quality racing while competing. Congratulations
to the winner of the Optimist fleet Kyle Ross from Falcon
YC and the winners of the open fleet Katja Smutny and
Kristy Slough from Zig Zag YC in the 29er. For Opti

Sail West Results
Sail West was being held last weekend on
July 9-11 at the Last Mountain Lake Sailing Center, home of
the Regina Sailing Club. The venue is located at Saskatchewan
Beach, 45 minutes from Regina in Saskatchewan. The event was
held as a pre-event for the Canada Summer Games 2005.
Team Toba attended this event with 17 athletes. Congratulations
to Royden Brousseau who finished 2nd in the Laser radial fleet
with 13 starters, Chris Bradley and Kristy Slough who finished
3rd in the 29er fleet, Amanda Bakker with the new CII rig
came 4th and Jocelyn McLaren sailed her best regatta ever
and finished 6th in a fleet of 15 Bytes. For all results go

Grand Opening at Zig Zag Yacht Club
At the Commodores Reception on Saturday
July 3 Commodore Jim Ferguson officially opened the new club
house for the Zig Zag Yacht Club. 300 members and friends
came out to admire what dedicated volunteers achieved in not
even 9 month. Curious ? Come out to the Zig Zag open regatta
on July 17/18 for some good racing and have a look at the
new and one of the greatest sailing facilities in Manitoba
and Northwestern Ontario. |

just around the corner again the Gimli Yacht Club is offering
a Learn to Sail program for adults, youth and kids. The school
will be run by an instructor from Victoria BC, Colin Hoult,
a fully certified CYA Blue instructor. Lawrence Stewart will

First Practice for Optimists
The Optimists had their first practice
last Saturday in gusty winds up to 20 knots and high
waves. Kudos to all the young athletes who tried to
survive in these windy conditions and to those who managed
to stay out their for six races. A big thank you to

Last Practice in Gimli
On Sunday we had out last practice
in Gimli for our 29ers, Lasers and Bytes. After a relaxed
trailer packing thanks to all the parents for helping
us we left the Gimli YC for the summer. A big thank you
to the Gimli YC for letting us use their facilities in
May and June. We will be back in September for some more
racing. |

Peter Loewen –
honored by the Gimli Yacht Club
At their AGM on January 27th, the Gimli Yacht Club honored
Peter Loewen for his never-ending engagement and support for
the sport of sailing. He served for 25th consecutive years
as Treasurer for the Gimli Yacht Club. Peter also filled the
GYC board positions of Social and Newsletter for several years
and currently also is responsible for Membership and Berthing.
Peter has been Treasurer of the Pan Am Sailing Federation
since 1999, Treasurer of the Canadian Yachting Association
since 2002, is immediate Past President of MSA after a 6 year
term, and has chaired many Gimli based regattas over the past
decade, most notably the 1999 Pan Am Games, the 2002 Canadian
Youth Championships and the 2003 Western Canada Summer Games. |

Fish Fly Cup, Gimli YC, June 6, 2004
With lot's of wind on Saturday all athletes
got some good training in. It became a bit of a challenge
when the wind picked up within minutes but we managed and
landed our boats on the beach. On Sunday, despite of exams,
we had five Lasers, one Europe and a Byte participating in
the Fish Fly Cup and we sailed six races. Good job everybody!
