Cruising in keelboats
is the name of the game at Gull Harbour Yacht Club, located
on Hecla Island on Lake Winnipeg.
This pretty part of the lake is great cruising ground,
with plenty of good anchorages within a four-hour sail of
the yacht club, including those on nearby Black Island and
Deer Island. Many of the club members own rowing-sailing
dinghies, which they also race.
Socializing is spontaneous, with pot-luck dinners held
on the dock some weekends. The club holds a general meeting
every year in the spring, along with a couple of winter
parties.
Gull Harbour members dock their keelboats at the
marina on Hecla Island, which is part of Hecla Provincial
Park. The marina offers gas and oil sales and pump-outs,
and the club of around 20 keelboats usually pulls their
boats out and stores them at Hecla, Gimli, Silver Harbour
or other places
around the lake for the winter.
